The LA Times reported on today's rally at California's Capitol Building ("Gay Marriage Opponents Press Legislature to Drop Prop. 8 Recension Bills"). The language of the "news" article shows a disregard for rule of law and the legal vote of Californians.
First is the title:
Gay marriage opponents press legislature to drop Prop. 8 recension bills [UPDATED]The news media has never called the pro-marriage group what it is, a pro-marriage group. Those who argue in favor of marriage are always labeled as "gay marriage opponents" or as anti-gay marriage. Why is that? Because if the news media can get you all to believe that marriage proponents are against "gay marriage", then by default, the news media creates an artificial validity of "gay marriage."
Next paragraph:
This is a red herring. The LA Times wants us to believe that marriage backers are wasting someone's time by protesting Prop 8. What the LA Times doesn't imply, is that the Assembly Judiciary Committee is the group pushing the issue of condemning the California voters for passing Prop. 8 in the first place. The California legislature is wasting their time on two frivolous bills. The protesters only showed up on the day of the vote, because the committee decided on that day to vote.As Sacramento grapples with its budget crisis, backers of the state's ban on gay marriage are urging law makers to drop two bills that call for Proposition 8 to be rescinded.
Next paragraph:
Again, the vote was in favor of a definition of marriage between a man and a woman. The news media only refers to it in negative terms, a "same-sex marriage ban."Voters approved Prop. 8 in November, but some California legislators have introduced bills urging the California Supreme Court to overturn the same-sex marriage ban.
And the piece du resistance:
Ignoring the vote of Californians, the state legislature's Assembly Judiciary Committee votes in favor of the bill condemning Prop. 8 and clears the way for general vote. They prove by this measure, that political expediency takes precedence over integrity and morals.Updated at 1:15 p.m.: The Assembly Judiciary Committee voted 7-3 today to go on record opposing Prop. 8.
You ought to be proud, California, for producing such tools as the LA Times and your state legislature.
